The hourly to salary formula
Annual salary = Hourly wage × Hours per week × Weeks per year
Full-time work is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. If you take unpaid time off, reduce the weeks. Two unpaid weeks makes it 2,000 hours.

Comparing an hourly job with a salaried offer
When you compare an hourly role with a salaried one, line up more than the base pay:
- Overtime: hourly non-exempt workers earn 1.5× after 40 hours. Exempt salaried workers don't. Starting in 2025, overtime premiums also get a federal tax deduction.
- Paid time off: salaried jobs usually pay holidays and vacation. Hourly jobs may not.
- Benefits: employer health contributions and 401(k) matches can be worth 10–30% of base pay.
