How salary paychecks are calculated
A salaried paycheck starts with your gross pay per period: annual salary divided by the number of paychecks you get in a year. From there, your employer takes out taxes and deductions in a fixed order:
- Pre-tax deductions — traditional 401(k), health premiums, HSA/FSA.
- Federal income tax — based on your W-4 and IRS Publication 15-T.
- FICA — 6.2% Social Security (up to $184,500) and 1.45% Medicare.
- State and local income tax — plus state programs like CA SDI or NJ FLI.
- After-tax deductions — Roth 401(k), union dues, garnishments.
$75,000 salary: take-home by pay frequency
Single filer in Texas, standard 2026 W-4, no benefits:
| Pay frequency | Paychecks | Gross per check | Take-home per check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,442.31 | $1,184.47 |
| Bi-weekly | 26 | $2,884.62 | $2,368.94 |
| Semi-monthly | 24 | $3,125.00 | $2,566.35 |
| Monthly | 12 | $6,250.00 | $5,132.71 |
How benefits change a salary paycheck
Add a 6% traditional 401(k) and $120 per paycheck for health insurance to the same $75,000 salary. Your bi-weekly take-home drops from $2,368.94 to $2,149.52 — only $219.42 less, even though $293.08 goes to benefits. Pre-tax deductions lower your taxable wages, so taxes fall by $73.66 per check.
Tips for salaried employees
- Check your first paycheck of the year. New tax tables, benefit premiums and 401(k) elections take effect in January.
- High earners see a raise in the fall. Once your wages pass $184,500, Social Security stops for the rest of 2026 and each check grows by 6.2% of gross.
- Watch bonuses. Bonuses are usually withheld at a flat 22% federal rate. Model one with the bonus tax calculator.
- Compare job offers by state. The same salary can be worth $5,000+ more a year in a no-income-tax state. Try take-home pay by state.
