The salary to hourly formula

Hourly wage = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

For a standard full-time job that's 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours. Paid holidays and vacation are included because a salary pays you for them too. If you're comparing against an hourly job that doesn't pay time off, subtract those weeks.

Why your after-tax hourly rate matters

Your gross hourly rate tells you what you're paid. Your after-tax hourly rate tells you what an hour of your time is really worth. Use it to judge overtime, side gigs, or whether a longer commute for a higher salary pays off. In a no-income-tax state, most workers keep 78–85% of each hour's pay. In high-tax states it's often 70–75%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my salary to an hourly wage?

Divide your annual salary by the hours you work in a year. A full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks), so a quick rule is salary ÷ 2,080. For example, $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

What is $50,000 a year hourly?

$50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour at 40 hours a week. At 37.5 hours a week it’s $25.64.

Should I use 2,080 or 2,000 hours?

Use 2,080 if you’re paid for holidays and vacation, which is standard for salaried jobs. Use 2,000 (50 weeks) to compare against an hourly job with two unpaid weeks off. Adjust the "weeks per year" field to match.

Quick mental math for salary to hourly?

Halve the salary and drop the last three zeros. $60,000 → about $30/hour. It slightly overstates the real rate ($28.85) because it assumes 2,000 hours.
